Walk on Water Design Competition
There is a Walk on Water competition held every semester. It is hosted by the University of San Diego in the spring, and Southwestern Community College in the fall. The object is to be the fastest team to race across the length of a typical lap pool. Each team has one person pilot a set of boat shoes using only his feet. Colleges, high schools, and professionals are allowed to enter the competition. Original designs are encouraged, as well as the use of recycled materials. San Diego Mesa College has consecutively won the college division for three semesters.

Engineering 101 Design Competition
In San Diego Mesa College's Engineering 101 class, students are asked to fabricate a device that will move in one or more circles around a stationary pole/mast. This impromptu design competition demonstrates the fundamental principles of force, friction, potential and kinetic energy, and the conservation of energy. It also emphasizes creativity and collaborative design as the students work in teams to generate a solution to the problem.
Rules:
The device may only be set into motion by the materials given. At least one component of the device must make at least one circle around the pole/mast. The device must finish with all the materials that it begins with intact. Lastly, the device must be fabricated within 45 minutes. The materials provided are as follows:
